Concert Ensemble, Black Mountain Songs, 2014

Performing ensemble members study and perform a wide range of diverse choral music in three to six voice parts and in many languages, including choral masterworks with orchestra.

With more rehearsal time and a vigorous training program, these choristers attain the highest reaches of vocal performance. Students in our performing ensembles have the opportunity to perform and record in a wide variety of settings and styles.

Our advanced treble singers join the Junior or Concert Ensembles, while advanced tenors and basses (changed voice singers) join the Bass Ensemble.

Concert Ensemble

Concert Ensemble is for advanced treble singers, aged 11 and up. Members of Concert Ensemble study and perform a wide range of diverse choral music in three to six voice parts and in many languages, including choral masterworks with orchestra. With more rehearsal time and a vigorous training program, these choristers reach the highest standards of vocal performance.

This group has collaborated with an impressive range of organizations and artists including the New York Philharmonic, The National, David Byrne, Wye Oak, Bon Iver, Shara Nova, International Contemporary Ensemble, William Brittelle, London Symphony Orchestra, Barbra Streisand, Arcade Fire, Sir Elton John, and Grizzly Bear.

Students in Concert Ensemble also participate in the creation of original productions. In 2019, Silent Voices: Lovestate premiered Off-Broadway at The New Victory Theater. Previous productions include the first two installments of the inclusive, social justice-oriented Silent Voices series (BAM 2017; National Sawdust 2018); Black Mountain Songs (BAM Next Wave Festival 2014); and Tell the Way (St. Ann’s Warehouse 2011).

Bass Ensemble

The Bass Ensemble is for advanced tenors and basses (changed voice singers). They have performed or recorded with major orchestras and artists such as the New York Philharmonic, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, John Legend and for such important dignitaries as Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the New York Giants and Jets, among others.

Each year, the Bass Ensemble goes on tour, performing in a variety of venues with other choral groups. Additionally, Brooklyn Youth Chorus hosts an annual Bass Ensemble Composer Competition; providing new compositions from a diverse range of composers for the men to perform.

Junior Ensemble

Junior Ensemble is an additional performing group for advanced treble singers, aged 11 and up. Similar to Concert Ensemble, members of Junior Ensemble study and perform a wide range of diverse choral music as well as participate in a variety of performance opportunities.

Past performances include Aging Magician (2017), Iron & Coal (2019), the Gates Foundation Goalkeepers Gala at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Carla Kihlstedt’s “Understory.”
