BACH: St. Matthew PASSION

Johann Sebastian Bach | St. Matthew Passion, BVW 244

Brian Giebler, Tenor, Evangelist
Sidney Outlaw, Baritone, Jesus
Sarah Frei, Soprano
Lucia Bradford, Mezzo-Soprano
Jacob Perry, Tenor
Cody Quattlebaum, Bass

featuring
Brooklyn Youth Chorus
Dianne Berkun Menaker, Artistic Director

*Please note the earlier start time for this event*

The St. Matthew Passion is one of Bach's most profound and enduring works. More than a sacred oratorio, this masterpiece grapples with timeless human struggles—betrayal, suffering, forgiveness, and redemption—questions that remain ever-present and deeply relevant.

The St. Matthew Passion is perhaps the most beloved in Bach’s tremendous canon of works for chorus and orchestra. Across a full riveting evening, the piece unfolds using two orchestras, two choruses, a youth chorus, dramatic characters, narration, and exquisite baroque aria performances.

The 2025 Indeterminacy Festival presents

Into the Charmed Churned Circle
Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 7:30pm
Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art
Main Hall Gallery
1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10301

This multi-discipline, multi-generational, immersive performance piece is created by Stanzi Vaubel and commissioned by the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Composed by Philippe Treuille and Stanzi Vaubel, the work draws inspiration from the architectural motifs of the Newhouse Center at Snug Harbor and Herman Melville’s epic seafaring story Moby Dick.

ICCC conjures the life and stories of the stoic sailors aboard a whaling vessel at the mercy of the sea: viscerally in touch with the unpredictably dangerous elements of the waters, while doggedly in pursuit of financial gain. The world premiere of ICCC is staged at the Newhouse Center at Snug Harbor in Staten Island, a landmarked former dormitory building dating back to 1833, when Snug Harbor served as a pioneering rest home for sailors. The choreography by Melanie Aceto and her choreo lab ensemble will incorporate a rope-like material that references the significance, strength, and language of ropes aboard a 19th century ship.

Instrumental and vocal performers hail from a consortium of ensembles including Brooklyn Youth Choir Bass Ensemble, Grace Chorale, Brooklyn Treble Choir, New York Choir Project, and Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra surround the audience, giving viewers a 360-degree immersive experience amid an authentic, historic, unforgettable maritime setting.

Part of The Indeterminacy Festival.
